A pretty productive day, today: a little over 1,600 words written, all for a chapter about the powers that shaped television behind the scenes before Soap. I’m pretty pleased as I’ve been aiming for a minimum of 1,000 words a day.
This chapter has probably been the easiest to write so far, though it’s also one that gives me the most pause. Although it’s vital to understand how TV stations decided on their programming in the ’60s and ’70s in order to understand why Soap was so revolutionary, you also need to understand the huge influence that pressure groups were exerting at the time. Sooner or later this means explaining the philosophies behind them.
Unfortunately, I haven’t yet found anybody from the organizations of the day willing to discuss what was going on then. While I understand what a cheek this is — “can you help me understand the thinking of your organization back then” — I don’t think this is really asking too much. The aim, after all, is to present a balanced account of the times.
In the meantime, I think it’s high time that I started rewatching Soap again. The last time I saw it was a couple years back. Here we go…
